Kevin Feige Says T’Challa Won’t Be Recast For Black Panther 2

Marvel’s virtual panel during Disney’s Investor Day event was jam-packed with exciting announcements about the studio’s plans for the future. But at the end of his presentation, Kevin Feige used the opportunity to say a few words about Black Panther star Chadwick Boseman, who died of colon cancer earlier this year. As devastating as Boseman’s loss was, it also left fans wondering how Marvel would move forward with his character’s next cinematic outing. Now, Feige has confirmed that the studio won’t be hiring a new actor to play T’Challa in Black Panther 2.

“I wanted to acknowledge the devastating loss of a dear friend and member of the Marvel Studios family,” Feige said. “Chadwick Boseman was an immensely talented actor and an inspirational individual who affected all of our lives professionally and personally. His portrayal of T’Challa the Black Panther is iconic and transcends iteration of the character in any other medium from Marvel’s past. It’s for that reason that we will not recast the character.”

Feige went on to explain how Black Panther 2 will continue the game-changing work that Boseman began with the original film in 2018. He also revealed the sequel’s new release date.

“To honor the legacy that Chad helped us build through his portrayal of the king of Wakanda, we want to continue to explore the world of Wakanda and all of the rich and varied characters introduced in the first film,” added Feige. “Writer/director Ryan Coogler is hard at work on the sequel now, and we’ll bring the film to you in theaters July 8, 2022.”

Last month, word broke that Marvel was planning to start shooting Black Panther 2 in July 2021. It was also reported that the movie will feature multiple villains, one of which could be played by Narcos: Mexico actor Tenoch Huerta.
