Warner Bros. Sets a 2023 Release Date For George Miller’s Furiosa

Earlier this year, George Miller officially began plotting his return to the Mad Max franchise by casting Anya Taylor-Joy as a young Furiosa in a prequel to Mad Max: Fury Road. Surprisingly, news of Taylor-Joy’s casting surfaced before Warner Bros. gave the movie a proper greenlight. But now, the studio has finally set a release date for the new film. Variety reports that Furiosa will hit theaters on June 23, 2023.

Taylor-Joy is taking over for Charlize Theron, who originated the role of Furiosa in Fury Road in 2015. Many fans and critics considered Furiosa to be that film’s breakout character and expected Theron to reprise her role in another sequel or spinoff. But it seems that Miller is more interested in exploring her origins. Theron said over the summer that it was “heartbreaking” not to be involved with the prequel. However, Taylor-Joy recently acknowledged that she won’t be able to match Theron’s performance. Instead, she plans to “work really hard” to put her own stamp on the character. In the meantime, Taylor-Joy is still receiving widespread acclaim for The Queen’s Gambit, which premiered on Netflix in October.

Plot details for Furiosa remain scarce, but the cast also includes Chris Hemsworth and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II in supporting roles. Unfortunately, their characters’ identities remain a mystery. Miller is returning as writer and director and will also produce the film alongside his longtime collaborator, Doug Mitchell.
