U.S. Postal Service Debuts Series of Star Wars Droids Stamps

It looks like 2021 is the year of the droids. In a press release, Lucasfilm announced that the most famous droids from the Star Wars Universe would end up on American citizens’ mail, thanks to the latest U.S. Postal Service stamps. The new series of Star Wars stamps will feature droids from both film and animation. So far, we have images of IG-11, R2-D2, K-2SO, D-O, L3-37, BB-8, C-3PO, a Gonk droid, 2-1B surgical droid, and Chopper. All the collection is designed by Greg Breeding, with William Gicker serving as the art director. The collection will be available on a pane of 20 stamps this spring.

The droids have always played a pivotal role in the Star Wars Universe since the early days of Episode IV: A New Hope. Over the years, they have entered into the collective imaginary as fans started to love the efficient R2-D2 or the clumsy C-3PO while they were doing their part in defeating the Empire. Most recently, Star Wars fans saw the unique and belligerent IG-11 in the premiere of The Mandalorian where he helps the titular character in saving The Child before meeting an inglorious end.
