James Gunn Says Fans Don’t Have To Watch Suicide Squad Before The Suicide Squad

With The Suicide Squad, James Gunn aims to bring several new anti-heroes into the live-action DC Universe. Regardless, his film still features a handful of characters returning from David Ayer’s original Suicide Squad. Presumably, this means that Gunn’s upcoming revamp of Task Force X takes place in the same continuity as Ayer’s movie. But it sounds like the new film is going to be light on references to its predecessor. In fact, Gunn himself promises that it’s not even required viewing beforehand.

While engaging with fans on Twitter earlier today, Gunn confirmed that fans can watch The Suicide Squad without having any prior knowledge about what happened in Ayer’s film. You can read what he had to say below.

Gunn’s response actually falls in line with what some of The Suicide Squad’s cast members have said about the film. Earlier this week, Joel Kinnaman told CBR that Gunn’s movie “lives in a world somewhere between a sequel and a reboot.” He also claimed that it “feels like a completely new universe.”

DC fans previously got a taste of Gunn’s vision for The Suicide Squad at last summer’s DC FanDome virutal event. Although some footage was shown, Warner Bros. has yet to unveil a proper trailer for the movie. Gunn recently teased that an official teaser will hit the internet in the near future. In the meantime, the studio just debuted some unseen footage in a new HBO Max promo.

The Suicide Squad hits theaters and HBO Max in 2016.
