A Hero Rises in the First Shin Ultraman Teaser Trailer

As U.S. audiences get ready for Godzilla vs. Kong, Japan is gearing up for one of its other popular creations to return to the big screen. Tsuburaya Productions has finally premiered the first look at its long-awaited Shin Ultraman movie with a brand new teaser trailer.

Shin Ultraman comes from the same creative team behind Shin Godzilla in 2016. That includes Neon Genesis Evangelion creator Hideaki Anno and Attack on Titan director Shinji Higuchi. The duo previously set a high bar for themselves with their revamped take on the King of the Monsters, which was critically acclaimed and went on to win seven Japan Academy Prize awards. Regardless, it looks like they managed to stay true to the classic feel of the Ultraman franchise.

Clocking in at just 36 seconds, the teaser doesn’t reveal much. It shows Japanese government officials and science experts running around trying to get a handle on the crisis gripping the country (as was the case with Shin Godzilla). However, we also get a few quick shots of the film’s modern updates of two kaiju from the original Ultraman TV series: Neronga and Gabora. And of course, there’s Ultraman himself, sporting an outfit that doesn’t stray too far from his 1966 design.

Shin Ultraman is scheduled to hit theaters in Japan this summer. At this point, it’s still not clear whether there are any plans for an American release.
