Zack Snyder Wanted Batgirl and Harley Quinn For His Justice League Sequels

At four hours and two minutes, Zack Snyder’s Justice League might be one of the most ambitious superheroes movies ever made. And if Snyder got his way, the sequels would have upped the ante even further. Snyder has already shared a few story details for unmade Justice League follow-ups, including the plan to have Clark Kent and Lois Lane raising their non-powered son, who would then grow up to become the next Batman. But one sequel would have featured another member of the Bat Family, along with one of their most popular villains.

Snyder revealed more of his sequel plans in a recent interview with Esquire. As alluded to in Zack Snyder’s Justice League‘s Knightmare scene. Harley Quinn died in Batman’s arms. According to Snyder, a sequel would have actually shown us how this happened. Plus, Batgirl would have made an appearance.

“You see, I always wanted Barbara Gordon to come in the movies,” said Snyder. “Commissioner Gordon would be on the way out, and we’d have Barbara starting to play a bigger role. My idea was that after Batman sacrificed himself, there would be a window where there was no Batman, and I thought Barbara could fill that until the child of Superman and Lois, who has no powers, would become Batman when he was of age…That was the idea anyway. It just seemed to make sense. Then, of course, Barbara could have been his mentor, but who knows? That’s all just… see now we’re just wishful thinking.”

Snyder didn’t mention who he had in mind to star as the DCEU’s version of Barbara Gordon. Regardless, the SnyderVerse chapter in DC movie history is officially closed. In the meantime, Warner Bros. recently confirmed that a Batgirl standalone movie is in the works for HBO Max. The future is also bright for Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn. She will reprise her role in James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad later this year.
