Gearbox Co-Founder Explains How Borderlands Will Differ From the Games
Video game adaptations are notoriously hard to pull off. But filmmakers have tried to improve on their success by telling brand new stories featuring the playable characters that everybody knows and loves. And it looks like Lionsgate’s upcoming Borderlands movie is following that model.
Earlier today, Gearbox Software co-founder Randy Pitchford took to Twitter to explain how closely the plot of the Borderlands film will mirror that of the games that inspired it. But because they occupy separate universes, their stories will unfold in unique ways. Regardless, Pitchford indicates that the movie is hoping to stay true to the essence of the games’ cast of characters.
To the interested: The Borderlands Cinematic Universe is not identical to the Borderlands Videogame Universe. We are authentic to characters, tone and style, but allow for independent storylines. The mediums are not the same, so the content should not be bound to the same rules.

This news shouldn’t come as a huge surprise. Borderlands scribe Craig Mazin is also the co-writer of HBO’s The Last of Us adaptation. And Mazin has already detailed his plans to “expand” The Last of Us‘ story. Sony’s Uncharted movie and Paramount+’s Halo series are also reportedly venturing beyond the narrative confines of their original video games.

Production on Borderlands kicked off last week. Pitchford also shared a behind-the-scenes photo from the film’s set that shows chairs for himself and fellow executive producers Ethan Smith and Avi Arad. You can check it out for yourself below.
