Black Adam Co-Star Sarah Shahi Shares Her Character’s Name

Last fall, Sarah Shahi joined Black Adam in a mystery role that immediately sent the rumor mill into overdrive. Shahi’s original casting announcement described her character as “a university professor turned freedom fighter in Kahndaq.” However, it wasn’t long before fans began theorizing that her role was bigger than New Line was letting on. Now, it’s starting to look as though they may have been right.

In a recent Instagram story post (via CBR), Shahi announced that she was finally starting work on Black Adam, which officially began production last week. But more importantly, she also confirmed her character’s name, and at this point, the reveal probably shouldn’t surprise anyone.

“Today is my first day filming #blackadam,” wrote Shahi. “I was cast in this role a year ago. I’ve had ups, downs, lefts and rights. They all led me here. Very proud to represent my fellow middle eastern brothers and sisters as Adrianna. Let’s continue to lift each other up as we tell each other’s stories. Human stories. Connecting stories. Stories we all have inside of us.”

For those unaware, Adrianna Tomaz became Isis in the pages of DC’s 52 miniseries, which published one issue per week from May 2006 to May 2007. She was introduced as an Egyptian refugee captured by Intergang and given to Black Adam as a gift. Over time, she proved to be a positive influence, inspiring Black Adam to do more good in the world. Eventually, he presented Adrianna with the amulet of Isis, which gave her the powers of its namesake goddess. They later got married in a ceremony officiated by Shazam (back when he was still known as Captain Marvel).

Shahi didn’t actually reveal her character’s last name. But at this point, we can probably lay any other theories to rest. Jaume Collet-Serra is directing Black Adam from a script by Adam Sztykiel, with revisions from Rory Haines and Sohrab Noshirvani. The film will hit theaters on July 29, 2022.
