New Poster, More Details for Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings

In concomitance with the freshly released teaser for Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, the first teaser poster has also made its way online. Earlier, Shang-Chi leading actor Simu Liu took to his socials to share the first look at his character. In a recent interview that accompanied all the promotional material that debuted today, the actor revealed that what he loves the most about Shang-Chi is the creative freedom with the character’s backstory. The upcoming movie features the first live-action adaptation of the superhero created by Steve Englehart and Jim Starlin.

“The most exciting thing about stepping into this character was that his backstory has never been told before,” Liu said while talking with EW. “We know so many different versions of Batman’s origin story, how his parents were murdered when he was very young. We know Peter Parker, who was bitten by a radioactive spider, and he loses his uncle. Shang-Chi’s story is very much unknown to most of the world, so we had a lot of freedom and creative liberty to make it the way that we wanted to.” (In the comics it involved him being the son of stereotypical villain Fu Manchu. For obvious reasons, it’s now the “real” Mandarin, Wenwu.)

In the same interview, director Destin Daniel Cretton explained his idea for making a superhero to whom everyone can relate.

“We wanted to make sure that Shang-Chi was just like any of us,” he said. “I want to watch this movie and say, ‘Yes, that’s how I feel. I feel out of place sometimes, and I cover it up with humor.’ He’s a kid who is out of his element and a fish out of water here in the U.S., and he’s covering it up with this charisma that I find very relatable.”

According to the producers’ plan, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings will hit theaters on Sept. 3. EW debuted some exclusive images today that can be seen here.
