The coronavirus pandemic isn’t over yet. But with vaccinations on the rise, movie theaters might finally be making a comeback…or at least that’s what Netflix and Cinemark are hoping. Variety brings word that the streaming service is teaming up with one of the country’s largest theater chains to show Zack Snyder’s Army of the Dead on the big screen before it premieres on Netflix on May 21.
The movie’s theatrical run lasts one week and kicks off on May 14. Netflix has previously screened original films like The Irishman and Roma in limited engagements to qualify for awards ceremonies. However, this marks the first time that a Netflix feature is getting a wide release courtesy of a major chain like Cinemark. The company is planning to screen Army of the Dead at 200 of its theaters. Fans will also be able to see it at select iPic, Landmark, Alamo Drafthouse, Harkins, and Cinépolis locations. That will bring its nationwide theater total to about 600. Unfortunately, AMC and Regal patrons are out of luck, as both chains declined to participate in the screenings.

“Cinemark is excited to work with Netflix on our first wide release and provide movie lovers the opportunity to see Army of the Dead in our theatres across the U.S.,” said Justin McDaniel, Cinemark’s senior VP of global content strategy. “Zack Snyder fans will love seeing the action in an immersive, cinematic environment with larger-than-life sight and sound technology.”
“Following the success of our limited-run in-theatre tests with Cinemark for films like Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, The Midnight Sky and The Christmas Chronicles 2, we are looking forward to the wider theatrical release of Army of the Dead,’ added Spencer Klein, Netflix’s head of distribution.
