Mads Mikkelsen Praises the Indiana Jones 5 Script

Over the last few years, Mads Mikkelsen has booked gigs in a number of high-profile film franchises, from Star Wars to the MCU, and beyond. But one of his more interesting projects on the horizon is Indiana Jones 5. Mikkelsen joined the cast of the upcoming sequel last month in a role that might be the movie’s villain. And with cameras expected to start rolling later this year, the Danish actor has nothing but good things to say about the script.

Given the lukewarm reception to 2008’s Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, longtime Indy fans might be wary about another entry in the 40-year-old franchise. Regardless, Mikkelsen doesn’t sound worried at all. While speaking with Collider, Mikkelsen used the opportunity to talk up the latest draft of Indy 5’s script.

“I’m very, very excited about it… I rewatched Raiders of the Lost Ark the other day, it is so well-done and so charming, and it’s such great storytelling. So yes it’s a great honor to be part of that franchise that I grew up with… I’m in a lucky position where they let me read the script before. And yes, it was everything I wished it to be, so that was just great.”

Mikkelsen also discussed how the filmmakers (including director James Mangold) are giving him freedom to add his own spin to the role he’s playing.

“I do think I’m invited in to create a character, I think that everybody wants that,” continued Mikkelsen. “That’s why they pick certain actors that they think can come up with certain things, and it will be a collaboration as it always is. Interesting enough, again a little like [his latest film] Riders of Justice, there is kind of a genre mix in Indiana Jones always. There is something that is a little larger-than-life, almost back to the 30s with a Peter Lorre kind of feel, and then you have Indiana Jones who kind of is a straight man. But he does produce a lot of funny and interesting things. But there are different character genres in some of those films.”

Indiana Jones 5 will hit theaters on July 22, 2022.
