Report: Danai Gurira May Reprise Her Role As Okoye For Disney+ Series

Ryan Coogler will be working on Black Panther: Wakanda Forever this summer when the movie finally starts production in Georgia. But aside from the highly-anticipated sequel, Coogler is also developing a new TV series for Disney+ that will explore other aspects of Wakandan culture. Marvel has yet to reveal which characters will appear on the spinoff. However, The Hollywood Reporter may have just given us our answer.

THR recently published a feature listing their picks for the top 100 attorneys working in the entertainment industry. One of the lawyers who made the cut was Jamie Mandelbaum, who counts Black Panther actress Danai Gurira as one of his clients. According to the story’s breakdown of Mandelbaum’s accomplishments, he brokered a deal for Gurira to “not only reprise her role as Okoye in the upcoming Black Panther sequel, but also in an origin spinoff series for Disney+.”

Gurira’s Okoye is the leader of the Dora Milaje. She was also one of the breakout characters from the original Black Panther. If she’s headlining the new series, it makes sense to examine her upbringing in Wakanda. THR didn’t actually specify whether the show will tell her origin story or that of a different character. But if she is the focal point of the series, that presumably takes her out of the running to inherit the Black Panther mantle from T’Challa following Chadwick Boseman’s death.

Coogler is creating the Wakanda series as part of an overall deal his Proximity Media banner made with The Walt Disney Company back in February. Over the next five years, his company will develop new TV projects for Marvel and other Disney subsidiaries. But in the meantime, Coogler’s Wakanda spinoff has yet to receive an official greenlight from the studio

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever hits theaters on July 8, 2022.
