Tim Miller Says Deadpool Can Still Work in the MCU Without Being R-Rated

Back in January, Marvel Studios confirmed that Deadpool 3 was officially happening with Ryan Reynolds reprising his role. Additionally, Kevin Feige assured fans that Deadpool‘s R-rated antics will remain intact. However, Feige subsequently stated that Marvel has no plans for any additional R-rated movies after Deadpool 3.  Theoretically, it could mean that the third Deadpool flick may be the last time that Marvel’s Merc with a Mouth can really be himself.

During a recent interview with Inverse, Tim Miller, the director of Deadpool, was asked if he believes the character can exist in the MCU without dramatically changing for the worse.

“I do,” replied Miller. “I think Ryan Reynolds’ take on the character and the way he embraces the particular kind of insanity — even if you said he’s not gonna use four-letter words — would still be there. He still is that character. You can take the R-rated parts out of it if you wanted and it would still be Deadpool if Ryan was doing it.”

Miller left Deadpool 2 over creative differences with Reynolds. Regardless, Miller still has admiration for Reynolds’ portrayal of Deadpool.

Speaking of Deadpool 2, 20th Century Fox released a PG-13 cut of the film called Once Upon a Deadpool. However, that experiment didn’t exactly light up the box office. That raises the question of whether audiences rejected it as a rehash of a previously released film or if they only want R-rated comedy and action from Deadpool. The first two R-rated Deadpool movies were massive blockbusters. That’s why Reynolds will get to reprise his role in the MCU.

Wendy Molyneux and Lizzie Molyneux-Logelin are writing Deadpool 3 for Marvel. The studio hasn’t announced a director yet. Regardless, it will likely begin filming in late 2022.
