Sony has announced the first new addition to the cast of Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse 2. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Issa Rae will provide the voice of Jessica Drew/Spider-Woman in the highly-anticipated sequel.
Following the Oscar-winning success of the original film, Into the Spider-Verse 2 will bring new spider-powered characters into Sony’s animated Marvel multiverse. Rae is joining a cast that includes returning stars Shameik Moore (Miles Morales) and Hailee Steinfeld (Gwen Stacy). This latest report also confirms that Phil Lord and Chris Miller, who worked as a producers on the first movie, are joining David Callaham as co-writers on the sequel. Earlier this year, Kemp Powers and Justin K. Thompson joined Joaquim Dos Santos as co-directors on the film as well.
Rae burst onto the scene in 2016 as the co-creator and star of HBO’s Insecure. Her work on the series has landed her three Emmy nominations and two Golden Globe nods. The show’s popularity has also opened more doors for Rae over the years. She has previously booked roles in films like The Hate U Give, Little, and The Photograph. Rae currently appears on HBO’s A Black Lady Sketch Show, which she also writes and produces.
