After embracing the macabre on movies like his own Firefly trilogy, Rob Zombie is setting his sights on more family-friendly territory for his next directorial effort. The shock rocker announced on Instagram today that he’s officially directing Universal’s big-screen reboot of The Munsters. You can check out his post below.

The original Munsters TV series premiered on CBS in 1964. It centered on the titular family of affable ghouls–Herman, Lily, Grandpa, Marilyn, and Eddie–who uproot themselves from Transvlvania and move to an all-American suburb. Although the show only aired 70 episodes over two seasons, it nonetheless made an indelible impact on the entertainment landscape. The characters eventually returned in a series of TV movies, several of which featured the original cast members. A sequel series, The Munsters Today, later premiered in 1988 and lasted until 1991.

Zombie had already achieved success as a singer by the time he made his directorial debut with House of 1000 Corpses in 2003. The remaining two installments of the Firefly trilogy, The Devil’s Rejects and 3 From Hell, hit theaters in 2005 and 2019, respectively. He also achieved moderate success with his 2007 remake of Halloween and its 2009 sequel. Earlier this year, Zombie released his seventh studio LP, The Lunar Injection Kool Aid Eclipse Conspiracy.
Universal has been flirting with the idea with a new Munsters movie for years. In the early 2000s, the Wayans brothers tried to make their own version, but it never materialized. Years later, the franchise almost got another shot on TV when Star Trek: Discovery co-creator Bryan Fuller began developing a reboot for NBC titled Mockingbird Lane, which would have starred Jerry O’Connell, Portia de Rossi, and Eddie Izzard. However, the show never went to series, and its pilot aired as a standalone special in 2012.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Zombie’s Munsters film is coming from Universal’s 1440 Productions division. This means that it’s likely to debut on Peacock instead of in theaters.
