Gemma Chan Talks Landing a Second MCU Role as Sersi in Eternals

Later this year, Gemma Chan will return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe as a brand new character. Chan first portrayed the Kree warrior Minn-Erva, who met a sad end caused by Maria Rambeau in Captain Marvel. The actress then landed the role of Sersi in the upcoming Eternals. In the story, she will lead the superpowered ensemble (unlike in the comics where Ikaris is the Eternals leader). And it appears that Chan feels some continuity between the two MCU projects she worked on, even though the roles are pretty different.

“I feel very lucky to have been welcomed back into the MCU so quickly after my first appearance; the reception has been very warm,” she said while talking with Empire. “I feel fortunate because we had a lot of crossover in the crew between the two films so there was continuity in that sense, but these are completely different projects, in completely different times, the characters are different.”

Chan then opened about Eternals director Chloé Zhao’s work on the project. According to the actress, the director worked as if she was on an indie movie set, using natural light. The outcome should leave fans pretty satisfied.

“It’s such an epic, ambitious film, with [Zhao] bringing her signature style and sensibility,” she says.

According to Disney’s plans, Eternals will hit theaters on Nov. 5.
