Jordan Vogt-Roberts Says Metal Gear Solid Movie Is “Punk Rock, Twisty”

Metal Gear fans will still have to wait for a while before watching the first live-action adaptation of Metal Gear Solid. However, in the last few weeks, things have definitely been moving at Sony Pictures. Not long ago, the movie announced its first casting in Oscar Isaac, as the Star Wars alumnus landed the leading role of Solid Snake. Now, director Jordan Vogt-Roberts opens about the heroic effort he put in to make this project happen. It’s something only a long-time fan of the video game franchise would do.

Metal Gear is something I’ve been trying to Sisyphus push up the hill for seven-plus years,” Vogt-Roberts said while talking with EW. “That game and Kojima-san’s world mean the world to me, and that’s something that I’m very proud of what we’re doing. I think it’s very Kojima, punk rock, twisty.”

Vogt-Roberts understands that the medium is the message. That’s why his movie might take some liberties with the original source. However, he sounds confident that longtime fans will be pleased.

“Those aren’t one-to-one translations,” he says. “So, I think you really need to understand when playing a game what it elicits from you, why it makes you feel certain ways, what the tone that it evokes is.”

The Kong: Skull Island director concluded by adding that casting Isaac for the leading part was part of “a long distance courtship” that he entertained with the actor’s agents.

Sony Picture has yet to announce an official release date for the movie.
