Way back in 2008, Tim Roth’s Emil Blonsky transformed into the Abomination in Incredible Hulk, and he hasn’t been seen since. Regardless, Marvel announced last year that Roth will reprise his role in She-Hulk. However, last week’s trailer for Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings revealed that Abomination’s return is happening sooner than expected.
While some fans have speculated that the Abomination seen in the trailer isn’t Blonsky, Marvel’s Kevin Feige has put those rumors to rest during a new interview with Rotten Tomatoes.
“Yes, we just recently released the final trailer for Shang-Chi,” said Feige. “Some fans said, ‘This looks like a character they hadn’t seen in many years named the Abomination, fighting a character that looks like Wong.’ And I can say that the reason it looks like that is because that is Abomination fighting Wong.

Additionally, Feige expressed his enjoyment at the fan reaction.
“[It’s] a fun thing to have a character that we haven’t had on screen in over a decade show up again in the MCU,” added Feige. “And to see fans on that little tag of the trailer recognize that and embrace that is great fun.”
However, Feige offered no insight as to why Abomination and Wong are fighting. Abomination was last seen in captivity in Incredible Hulk. The Marvel One-Shot short, The Consultant, also addressed Abomination’s fate. Nick Fury didn’t want Abomination anywhere near the Avengers. That’s why Phil Coulson and Jasper Sitwell sent Tony Stark to sabotage the World Security Council’s request when he confronted General Ross. Regardless, somebody has freed the Abomination. Perhaps we’ll even find out who did it soon.
Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings hits theaters on September 3.
