Marvel Studios and DC Films Are Skipping San Diego Comic-Con@Home

Although COVID-19 vaccines are now widely available, San Diego Comic-Con is once again going virtual this year. Unfortunately, this month’s Comic-Con@Home festivities won’t feature any new announcements from either Marvel or DC about their upcoming films. According to Deadline, the Big Two have decided to sit out the event.

This news is somewhat surprising, especially since both studios have highly-anticipated projects hitting screens over the next year. Whether it’s Marvel’s Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness or DC’s The Flash, Comic-Con (under normal circumstances, anyway) would be the ideal place to show off early footage from those films. Marvel and DC also have a handful of new TV shows in varying stages of development. Regardless, this isn’t the first time either studio has opted out of the annual convention. In fact, the last time DC Films showed up was in 2018, when they gave fans a sneak peek at Wonder Woman 1984. That same year, it was Marvel’s turn to stay home. But they returned in 2019 to announce their entire Phase Four slate.

In the meantime, DC is likely planning several big announcements for this year’s edition of DC FanDome, which is scheduled for October. Fans can probably expect new looks at The Flash, Black Adam, Shazam!: Fury of the Gods, and The Batman. And even though Marvel Studios is sitting out Comic-Con@Home, the same isn’t necessarily true for Sony. So it’s possible that Spider-Man: No Way Home, Venom: Let There Be Carnage, and Morbius might still have a presence at the event. Warner Bros. Television is also hosting a panel for Legends of Tomorrow.

San Diego Comic-Con@Home will be held from July 23-25.
