Taika Waititi Explains Why Thor: Love and Thunder “Almost…Shouldn’t Be Made”

While Thor: Love and Thunder is still 10 months away from theaters, director Taika Waititi can’t seem to contain his excitement for it. Via THR, Waititi recently told Empire magazine that Love and Thunder was the “craziest film” he’s made to date. He also fatuously suggested that perhaps it should never have been made at all.

“Well, just between (me and) you and the readers, I’ve done some crazy s*** in my life,” said Waititi. “I’ve lived, like, ten lifetimes. But it’s the craziest film I’ve ever done.”

“If you wrote down all the elements of this film, it shouldn’t make sense,” added Waititi. “It’s almost like it shouldn’t be made. If you walked into a room and said, ‘I want this and this and this.’ Who’s in it? These people. What are you going to call it? Love And Thunder. I mean, you’d never work again. Maybe I won’t after this.”

Additionally, Waititi said “there’ll be far more emotion in this film. And a lot more love. And a lot more thunder, and a lot more Thor, if you’ve seen the photos.”

This will be Chris Hemsworth’s fourth movie in the Thor franchise, but it’s far from a solo flick. Hemsworth will be joined by Chris Pratt, Dave Bautista, Karen Gillan, Pom Klementieff, and Vin Diesel’s Guardians of the Galaxy. Tessa Thompson also stars in the film as Valkyrie, alongside Natalie Portman as Jane Foster/Mighty Thor, and Jaimie Alexander as Lady Sif. Additionally, Christian Bale will portray the film’s villain, Gor the God Butcher.

Thor: Love and Thunder will hit theaters on May 6, 2022.
