Last fall, 20th Century Studios got serious about producing another entry in the Predator franchise when they hired 10 Cloverfield Lane helmer Dan Trachtenberg to direct a new film starring the dreadlocked alien trophy hunters. There hasn’t been a lot of news about the project since then. But while speaking with Collider, producers John Davis and John Fox provided a juicy little update. Among other details, they confirmed that Trachtenberg’s movie will hit theaters under the simple title of Skull.
Davis and Fox also shared a few tidbits about the film’s plot. Apparently, Skull will be an origin story that recounts the first time a Predator set foot on Earth. The producers indicated that the story takes place “early” in human history. They also confirmed that the film will feature a female protagonist as the lead character. Amber Midthunder is rumored to play that heroine. The former Legion actress has yet to confirm her involvement. Regardless, it might not be much longer before we find out if Midthunder is attached. Because according to Davis, the movie is already “three-quarters of the way through” production.
After a string of subpar sequels and reboots dating all the way back to 1990’s Predator 2, it might be hard for some fans to muster the enthusiasm for yet another follow-up. However, Davis promises that Trachtenberg’s film stays true to the spirit of the first Predator movie starring Arnold Schwarzenegger.

“It goes back to what made the original Predator movie work,” said Davis. “It’s the ingenuity of a human being who won’t give up, who’s able to observe and interpret, basically being able to beat a stronger, more powerful, well-armed force.”
“It actually has more akin to The Revenant than it does any film in the Predator canon,” added Fox. “You’ll know what I mean once you see it.”
Trachtenberg is directing Skull from a screenplay by Patrick Aison. 20th Century Studios hasn’t announced a release date for the film. But if it’s this far along in production, a 2022 release isn’t out of the question.
