HBO Max is Developing a Black Canary Movie With Jurnee Smollett

HBO Max is Developing a Black Canary Movie

Birds of Prey’s disappointing performance at the box office last year appeared to rule out any hope for a sequel or spinoffs focusing on individual characters. However, HBO Max is giving one of the film’s heroines another shot at stardom. The Hollywood Reporter is confirming reports that HBO Max is developing a Black Canary solo movie. Jurnee Smollett is already set to reprise her role as Dinah Lance. Cinelinx was the first to report the news.

The film will reunite Smollett with Lovecraft Country creator Misha Green, who will write the script. Green is also planning to write and direct Tomb Raider 2 for MGM. There’s still no word on who might fill the director’s chair on Black Canary. However, Sur Kroll is onboard as a producer.

At the end of Birds of Prey, Dinah formed a new team of heroines alongside Mary Elizabeth Winstead’s Huntress and Rosie Perez’s Renee Montoya. It’s not clear if Warner Bros. plans to revisit these characters in Black Canary as well. The film could also explore Dinah’s relationship with her mother, who was also Black Canary in the comics.

Black Canary is the latest DC film aiming for a straight-to-streaming release. Warner Bros. previously confirmed that its Batgirl and Zatanna movies will make their own debuts on HBO Max as well. The studio might also be considering a similar release strategy for its Static Shock film. Regardless, this is still unconfirmed.
