Sony’s Spider-Man Universe Is the New Brand for Sony’s Marvel Films

Spider-Man Universe Is the New Brand for Sony’s Marvel Films

It’s no secret that Sony has a had bit of MCU envy for over a decade. But since Sony has the cinematic rights to Spider-Man and all of his affiliated characters, it’s the only studio other than Disney that can make Marvel movies of its own. Until recently, films like Venom and Morbius were united under the Sony Pictures Universe of Marvel Characters brand. However, that wasn’t exactly a catchy name. Which is probably why Sony has changed it.

Via Collider, Sony’s new brand for its Marvel movies will be called “Sony’s Spider-Man Universe.” Sony’s current deal with Marvel Studios only includes Spider-Man: No Way Home and one MCU film to be named later. Regardless, it’s possible that Sony’s MCU contract could still be renewed for additional movies. Either way, it’s inevitable that Spider-Man will show up in the Spider-Man Universe films.

The only real question is this: how soon will that happen? Venom star Tom Hardy has openly lobbied for a crossover with Spider-Man. Perhaps it’s closer to fruition than we initially believed.

Additionally, Tom Holland’s contract is up after No Way Home. While Holland has already expressed a willingness to keep playing Spider-Man, he is also going to need a new deal.

The first picture officially under the Sony’s Spider-Man Universe banner will be Venom: Let There Be Carnage. That movie will arrive in theaters on October 15. Then, Morbius will follow on January 28, 2022. The Aaron Taylor-Johnson-led Kraven the Hunter movie is also on the schedule for January 13, 2023.

What do you think about the name of Sony’s new brand? Which alternative would you suggest in its place? And are you looking forward to the potential Spider-Man vs. Venom movie? Share your thoughts in the comment section below!
