The return of the Ghostbusters has slipped further away. But after more than 30 years, what difference does another week make? According to Variety, Sony will no longer release Ghostbusters: Afterlife on November 11 as previously expected. Instead, the long-awaited sequel will now arrive eight days later on November 19.
Paramount was originally planning to release Top Gun: Maverick on that date. Regardless, Paramount has now vacated that date in favor of a May 27, 2022 release. That allowed Sony the opportunity to swoop in and take the date formerly held by Maverick.
This isn’t Afterlife’s first delay. The initial release was supposed to happen in summer 2020. However, a series of COVID shakeups pushed it back to this fall.

Afterlife picks up several years after the original team faded into obscurity and introduces a new family of characters, including Carrie Coon’s Callie and her children, Phoebe (Mckenna Grace) and Trevor (Finn Wolfhard). After months of speculation, the film’s latest trailer finally confirmed their relation to founding Ghostbuster Egon Spengler. It also featured an appearance by Annie Potts’ Janine Melnitz along with a vocal cameo by Dan Aykroyd’s Ray Stantz.
Sony gave CinemaCon attendees the chance to watch Afterlife last month. And overall the consensus seems to be that the film honors what came before while managing to put a fresh spin on the decades-old franchise.
