Warner Bros. Delays George Miller’s Furiosa Prequel To 2024

Mad Max fans will have to wait another year to return to the films’ post-apocalyptic desert landscapes. According to Variety, George Miller’s Furiosa is vacating its original June 23, 2023 release date. The movie will now hit theaters on May 24, 2024.

Furiosa takes place several years before Mad Max: Fury Road and centers on that film’s breakout character, originally played by Charlize Theron. But this time, the role will be played by Anya Taylor-Joy, who previously starred in The Queen’s Gambit and also has an upcoming turn in Edgar Wright’s Last Night in Soho. In a recent interview, Miller revealed that Taylor-Joy clinched the part by reciting the “I’m mad as hell” monologue from 1976’s Network during her audition, which was conducted via iPhone.

Taylor-Joy isn’t the only performer lending star power to the highly-anticipated prequel. Chris Hemsworth and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II have also booked supporting roles in the film. Production is expected to begin in Australia sometime next year and it will reportedly inject at least $350 million AUD into the local economy, creating at least 850 new jobs in the process.

So far, Furiosa isn’t facing any competition at the box office on its new 2024 premiere date. In the meantime, several of the vehicles from Fury Road are about to go up for auction. So if you have deep pockets and you can fit a War Rig in your driveway, click here.
