New Dune Featurette Examines the Film’s Massive Scope

As anyone who’s read the book can tell you, Dune is a story about many things. Obviously, it’s an epic sci-fi saga with weighty environmental and political themes. But it also features the familiar story of a young man struggling to find his place in the world. And as with many of these types of stories, a blossoming romance is involved. Warner Bros. has just released a new featurette for Dune that zeroes in on some of the film’s more human elements, including the budding relationship between Paul Atreides and Chani.

The featurette also includes new interviews with Denis Villeneuve, Timothée Chalamet (Paul), and Zendaya (Chani). As Dune’s director and co-writer, Villeneuve understands how “rich” the original novel is. But despite the movie’s fantastical nature, it sounds like Paul’s coming-of-age arc is what keeps it at least somewhat grounded in reality. Check out what they all had to say below.

Luckily, Chalamet and Zendaya got along on and off-screen. Both actors shared their admiration for each other before they started working on the film. And according to Zendaya, Chalamet had “become one of [her] closest and dearest friends” by the end of production. This bodes well for how their relationship will unfold in Dune, because as Villeneuve notes, Chani will become Paul’s “right arm” as well as his “soul.”

Dune will hit theaters and HBO Max on October 22.
