Leslie Grace’s next Batgirl co-star has been found. According to Deadline, Jacob Scipio has booked a role in HBO Max’s upcoming solo film for Barbara Gordon and her crime-fighting alter-ego. However, Warner Bros. isn’t sharing any specifics about Scipio’s character.
Scipio previously worked with Directors Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah on Bad Boys For Life in 2020, where he played the film’s villain. Earlier this year, Scipio starred opposite Michael B. Jordan in Without Remorse, and he will soon appear in Netflix’s Pieces of Her alongside Toni Collette. Scipio also has a role as Antonio Banderas’ son in The Expendables 4, which is currently in production.
Deadline also confirms that Batgirl will feature J.K. Simmons reprising his Justice League role as Barbara’s father, Commissioner James Gordon. The film is one of several upcoming DC movies slated for release as HBO Max exclusives. Other straight-to-streaming projects include Zatanna, Blue Beetle, and Static Shock.

During DC FanDome, Arbi and Fallah appeared alongside Grace and screenwriter Christina Hodson to drop some early hints about what kind of Batgirl story they plan on telling. Hodson indicated that the film represents a journey of self-discovery for Barbara. Additionally, the filmmakers revealed some concept art for Grace’s costume, which retains Barbara’s cowl and red hair from the comics.
Warner Bros. hasn’t announced a release date for Batgirl, but a 2022 premiere seems likely.
