Derek Cianfrance Will Direct Ryan Gosling’s Wolfman Movie

Universal has found a new filmmaker to bring Ryan Gosling’s Wolfman concept to life. According to Deadline, the studio has brought on Derek Cianfrance to write and direct the upcoming feature.

This won’t be Cianfrance’s first collaboration with Gosling. The two previously worked together on Blue Valentine in 2010 and The Place Beyond the Pines in 2012. Cianfrance released his last film, The Light Between Oceans, in 2016. He recently earned an Oscar nomination for Best Original Screenplay for writing last year’s Sound of Metal. Additionally, he co-wrote and directed the HBO miniseries I Know This Much is True, which also aired in 2020.

“Horror movies were my first love,” said Cianfrance in a new statement. “My entry into what cinema was capable of narratively, psychologically and aesthetically. Coupled with the opportunity to collaborate with Ryan again, this is truly a dream come true. I’m thrilled and inspired to work with the good folks at Blumhouse and Universal to bring this monster back to life in our collective unconscious.”

Gosling isn’t just headlining Wolfman as its title character. He also came up with the original idea and pitched it to Universal himself. Rather than a period piece, the film will be a modern update of the original 1941 creature feature. Last we heard, the studio was initially circling The Invisible Man helmer Leigh Whannell to direct the movie. But Deadline confirms that he stepped away from the project due to scheduling conflicts. Gosling is producing the film alongside Jason Blum and Ken Kao.

Universal still hasn’t set a release date for Wolfman.
