J.K. Simmons Starts Shooting the Batgirl Movie in January

After briefly appearing in both versions of Justice League, J.K. Simmons will have another chance to bring Commissioner Gordon to life in HBO Max’s Batgirl movie. News of Simmons’ involvement took a number of fans by surprise, since Warner Bros. has effectively closed the book on the Snyderverse. Regardless, he is officially set to reprise his role opposite his new onscreen daughter, Leslie Grace, who is headlining the film as Barbara Gordon. While speaking with the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Simmons confirmed a January 2022 start date for his DCEU return. Shooting Batgirl.

It turns out that Simmons was just as surprised as the rest of us when Warner Bros. called him up. However, he teased that Batgirl will give him much more to do than just hang around GCPD headquarters.

“I was completely flabbergasted that they came back to me recently and wanted to have me be Commissioner Gordon again, and have it be a more significant role,” said Simmons. “Leslie Grace is Batgirl and I think I’m actually going to get on the horn with her and the director in the next couple of days and do a little preliminary rehearsals on it. A couple of months from now — well, they start very soon and then I jump on board sometime in January over in Glasgow, which is a wonderful place to be shooting it because it’s gothic. I’m excited to be the once and future Jim Gordon.”

Simmons also discussed how the filmmakers invited him to be part of Batgirl’s creative process.

“I had a long discussion with the guys about how we want to portray him,” added Simmons. “And the script, I thought … I just don’t want to give away anything at all, so I’m not gonna talk about the structure of it or any of that, but I thought it was a really interesting take on introducing Batgirl and giving Jim Gordon, fleshing him out certainly more than I had a chance to do in my first foray into that.”

Batgirl will likely premiere on HBO Max sometime in 2022.
