Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom Synopsis Teases an ‘Uneasy Alliance’

Just under a year remains until Arthur Curry returns to theaters in Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom. The movie finally wrapped production earlier this month and while we still know very little about the story, a new listing on Warner Bros.’ official website may have revealed a major plot point. The studio recently shared a full preview of its 2022 film slate, which wraps up next December with James Wan’s highly-anticipated Aquaman sequel. However, the accompanying synopsis is currently sending the rumor mill into overdrive.

Here’s the new synopsis for Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom:

“When an ancient power is unleashed, Aquaman must forge an uneasy alliance with an unlikely ally to protect Atlantis, and the world, from irreversible devastation.”

The summary’s reference to an “ancient power” is a mystery of its own. But even more exciting is the mention of an “unlikely ally” who will join Arthur on his latest crusade. As far as we know, there are two possible candidates who could fill this role. One is Patrick Wilson’s Orm, the disgraced former king of Atlantis and Arthur’s half-brother who served as the last film’s primary villain. The last time we saw Orm, he was facing imprisonment in an Atlantean jail. Regardless, Arthur indicated a willingness to heal their broken relationship.

Another possibility is Yahya Abdul-Mateen II’s Black Manta, although this seems less likely. After all, Aquaman’s post-credits scene teased that David Kane is forming his own alliance with Randall Park’s Dr. Stephen Shin. And since Black Manta still blames Arthur for his father’s death, he probably doesn’t have any time to mend fences.

Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom will hit theaters on December 16, 2022.
