Winston Duke Has a Much Larger Role In Black Panther: Wakanda Forever

As of next week, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever will begin filming again. And while no one can replace the late Chadwick Boseman, at least one cast member will have a more significant presence in the sequel. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Winston Duke secured “a hefty raise for his return to Black Panther,” because his role is much larger this time. Winston Duke has.

Duke portrayed M’Baku, the leader of the Jabari tribe, in Black Panther, and he also reprised his role in Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame. In the comics, M’Baku is T’Challa’s rival and enemy. However, the films have portrayed M’Baku in a more heroic light. He also has a much closer relationship with T’Challa in the MCU than he ever did in the Black Panther comics.

This has led to some speculation that M’Baku could eventually take up the mantle of Black Panther in the films. Currently, it’s expected that Letitia Wright’s Shuri will be the Black Panther in Wakanda Forever. That’s because she was T’Challa’s successor in the comics before he reclaimed the role. Regardless, Marvel has yet to confirm that anyone will claim the role of Black Panther in the next film. It’s also unclear how the movie will address Boseman’s passing.

Additionally, THR’s report notes that production was supposed to restart last Monday. Unfortunately, Lupita Nyong’o and other members of the cast and crew tested positive for COVID-19.  Despite that, cameras are expected to roll again on Monday.

Finally, THR indicates that most of Wakanda Forever has already been filmed. Only four weeks of shooting are on the schedule before production will wrap again.

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever will hit theaters on November 11.
