The future of Legendary’s MonsterVerse has been up in the air ever since Godzilla vs. Kong hit theaters and HBO Max last spring. But now it looks like the franchise is expanding to TV. According to The Wrap, Apple TV+ has ordered its own kaiju-themed series set in the same universe as Legendary’s films.
Judging by its official description, the show will take place after 2014’s Godzilla, but before the events of its 2019 sequel, King of the Monsters. The longline reads, “Following the thunderous battle between Godzilla and the Titans that leveled San Francisco and the shocking new reality that monsters are real, the series explores one family’s journey to uncover its buried secrets and a legacy linking them to the secret organization known as Monarch.”
Legendary introduced Monarch in the original Godzilla film as the secret organization that monitors kaiju (or “Titan”) activity on Earth. Its history was further explored in Kong: Skull Island in 2017. Since then, it has since functioned as the glue that ties all of the studio’s MonsterVerse installments together. Although Apple’s synopsis indicates that the new series will introduce brand new characters, it’s possible that we might see familiar faces from the movies as well. But whether Godzilla appears alongside any other monsters remains to be seen.

Chris Black and Matt Fraction created the as-yet-untitled series with Legendary Television producing. Black previously worked as a writer and producer on Star Trek: Enterprise and will act as the primary showrunner. Meanwhile, the show marks the first significant TV project for Fraction, whose critically-acclaimed run on Marvel’s Hawkeye comics heavily influenced the recent TV series on Disney+. Joby Harold and Tory Tunnell will also executive produce via Safehouse Pictures alongside Toho’s Hiro Matsuoka and Takemasa Arita.
