Ariana DeBose Joins the Cast of Sony’s Kraven the Hunter

Sony is adding even more star power to J.C. Chandor’s Kraven the Hunter spinoff. According to Deadline, Ariana DeBose has booked a supporting role in the upcoming film, with several sources hinting that she’s playing Kraven’s longtime love interest, Calypso.

The studio hasn’t actually confirmed which character DeBose will play. Regardless, Calypso seems like a natural fit. Originally created by Denny O’Neil and Alan Weiss in 1980, the character was introduced as a Haitian priestess who dabbled in voodoo and often teamed up with Kraven in his fights against Spider-Man. Calypso also played a major role in “Torment,” Marvel’s follow up to the “Kraven’s Last Hunt” storyline.

DeBose has been earning rave reviews for her performance as Anita in Steven Spielberg’s West Side Story remake. Last weekend, she won the SAG Award for best supporting actress and recently landed a nomination in the same category at this month’s Academy Awards. DeBose is also a Broadway vet. In 2018, she received a Tony Award nod for her performance in Summer: The Donna Summer Musical. Some of her other screen credits include Netflix’s The Prom and Apple TV+’s Schmigadoon!

Aaron Taylor-Johnson is headlining the movie as Kraven after previously starring as Pietro Maximoff/Quicksilver in the MCU. Last month, Russell Crowe and Fred Hechinger joined the film’s cast as well. Both actors’ roles remain unconfirmed, but rumor has it that Hechinger is playing Kraven’s half-brother, Dmitri Smerdyakov, a.k.a. the Chameleon. Chandor is directing from a screenplay by Art Marcum & Matt Holloway and Richard Wenk.

Kraven the Hunter will hit theaters on January 13, 2023.
