Now that The Batman is finally out in the world, many fans are eager to learn how the filmmakers brought every aspect of the reboot to life. New answers will be revealed when James Field’s The Art of The Batman hits bookstores next month. But ahead of its release, DC has shared a few pages featuring new looks at the design process for Robert Pattinson’s batsuit and Zoë Kravitz’s Catwoman outfit.
The pages (via Twitter) show the designs’ evolution from concept art to finished product. They also feature new insights from costume designer Glyn Dillon and supervising costume effects modeler Pierre Bohanna. In the case of Pattinson’s wardrobe, Dillon recalled how director Matt Reeves wanted every aspect of the suit to have a purpose, which informed his team’s decision to use ballistic shielding on his costume. Dillon also discussed the design of Pattinson’s utility belt and explained how his team constructed vertebrae-like pieces to give the actor’s head a full range of motion (an issue that has famously plagued Bat-actors for years).

Meanwhile, Jacqueline Durran, who designed Kravitz’s suit, stressed that in Reeves’ film, Selina Kyle hasn’t officially become Catwoman yet. So her costume technically isn’t a catsuit. In the end, the designers settled on a version that looked like it was “from the real world” and, as Kravitz observed, easy to tell that Selina had “worn this thing to s**t.” Kravitz also added that the suit is “kind of alluding to what Catwoman will be.”
