Austin Butler in Talks To Play Feyd-Rautha in Dune: Part Two

In Frank Herbert’s Dune, Feyd-Rautha is one of the primary antagonists. That’s why his omission from Denis Villeneuve’s film adaptation last year took a lot of fans by surprise. However, the character is set to make a big splash in the upcoming sequel. Variety is reporting that Austin Butler is in talks to bring Feyd to life in Dune: Part Two.

Herbert’s original novel introduced Feyd-Rautha as Baron Vladimir Harkonnen’s nephew and Glossu Rabban’s younger brother (both of whom appeared in Dune as played by Stellan Skarsgård and Dave Bautista, respectively). His cunning and ferocity made him the Baron’s choice to not only inherit House Harkonnen, but also to become Emperor of the Known Universe. Feyd often displayed his own penchant for sadistic violence in single combat, where he would typically engage his opponents with a hidden poison spur.

Later this year, Butler will headline Baz Luhrmann’s Elvis biopic, which opens in June. He previously had supporting roles in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood and The Dead Don’t Die. Butler also starred in MTV’s The Shannara Chronicles from 2016-2017.

Feyd-Rautha is one of at least three new Dune characters making their debut in Part Two. Earlier this week, it was reported that Florence Pugh was in negotiations to appear in the film as Princess Irulan. The producers are also looking for an actor to play Irulan’s father, Emperor Shaddam IV.

Butler won’t be the first actor to play Feyd-Rautha onscreen. Sting previously embodied the character in David Lynch’s 1984 adaptation of Dune. Nearly two decades later, Matt Keeslar put his own spin on the role in SYFY’s Frank Herbert’s Dune miniseries.

Dune: Part Two will hit theaters on October 20, 2023.
