Denis Villeneuve Says Dune: Part Two Will Feature More IMAX Footage

Dune was a pandemic-era hit when it arrived in theaters last fall. But while most would agree that Denis Villeneuve and his collaborators successfully managed to adapt the first half of Frank Herbert’s original novel, fans are eager to see if they can stick the landing. Next year, Dune: Part Two will conclude the flagship chapter of Herbert’s sci-fi saga in expectedly grand fashion. And it sounds like Villeneuve wants to give viewers even more impressive scenery to chew on.

Aside from its rich story, Dune was lauded for its visual effects, cinematography, and production design. But the film’s striking visuals are largely indebted to the use of IMAX cameras. And when asked if the sequel will include more scenes like this, Villeneuve told Collider that it would.

“Definitely,” said Villeneuve. “[Cinematographer] Greig Fraser and I, we fell in love with this format, and definitely there be—even probably more—IMAX footage in this movie. Definitely.”

Villeneuve is currently casting new roles in Part Two, which is rumored to feature Florence Pugh as Princess Irulan and Austin Butler as Feyd-Rautha. Production will have to start later this year into order to make the film’s 2023 release date. However, the script is still undergoing a few last-minute changes.

“The screenplay is finished mostly, but it’s always a work in progress,” added Villeneuve. “It’ll be a work in progress until final cut, but I will say it’s solidified. I have a script in my hands. We are in prep right now.”

Dune: Part Two will hit theaters on October 20, 2023.
