Blue Beetle Movie Adds George Lopez To the Cast

The live-action Blue Beetle movie is getting some additional star power. Via The Wrap, comedian George Lopez has joined the cast, and he’s not alone. The other new additions include Adriana Barraza, Elpidia Carrillo, and Damián Alcázar.

Cobra Kai‘s Xolo Maridueña is headlining the film as Jaime Reyes/Blue Beetle. Lopez will portray Uncle Rudy, with Barraza as Nana, Carrillo as Rocio, and Alcázar as Alberto; all of whom are members of Jamie’s extended family. Director Angel Manuel Soto also shared a quote about the new additions to the cast.

“Initially, my goal with finding the family was to be able to have an authentic group of people, not just as authentic on the Latino side, but authentic on the accents and authentic on the experience overall, it was very important for me to have the elders in the family to be from Mexico,” said Soto. “And more than just being from Mexico is honoring those amazing beloved actors from Mexico that have paved the way not just in Latin American cinema, but also crossing over to the Anglo Saxon community and Latin American community in the United States.”

“And then you have somebody on the younger side, the new blood that’s coming in, like Belissa [Escobedo] and Xolo, they’re Mexican American,” added Soto. “And tying them with the guys that came before which have a strong history of being born in Mexico and then coming over to the US. Being able to provide a Mexican family, a brown Mexican family, that embraces that level of authenticity, I think this cast allowed us to have all of that.”

Within DC’s comic book universe, Jamie is the third Blue Beetle. He is also empowered by an alien scarab that attaches itself to his body and demonstrates a will of its own. Additionally, Jamie’s Blue Beetle will have the distinction of being the first Latino DC hero to headline his own film.

Blue Beetle will hit theaters on August 18, 2023.
