The battle for Voltron’s big screen future might be nearing its end. Last month, director Rawson Marshall Thurber began pitching a live-action take on the beloved anime series to several major studios in Hollywood. This ultimately led to a massive bidding war over the project’s distribution rights. Now, Deadline brings word that Amazon Studios is the likely victor. Nothing is set in stone yet, but talks are currently underway to bring the giant robot to Prime Video.
Thurber (Red Notice) intends to direct the movie from a screenplay he co-wrote with Ellen Shanman. Todd Lieberman and David Hoberman are also on board to produce the film alongside Bob Koplar of World Events Productions. This is the latest in a long line of attempts to bring Voltron to life in live-action. Hollywood has been trying to produce an adaptation since at least 2005. Regardless, a film has yet to materialize.

If a deal is actually reached, Amazon will have beaten Warner Bros. and Universal, both of whom were also vying to distribute the film. Thurber reportedly received offers from at least six different studios. But Netflix, which previously aired Voltron: Legendary Defender from 2016-2018, was never in the running. This isn’t necessarily a surprise, because Netflix is already developing another mecha anime adaptation, Gundam, with director Jordan Vogt-Roberts directing.
