Lightyear Trailer 2 Offers Humor and Serious Danger for Buzz

All the footage from Disney and Pixar‘s Lightyear so far has positioned it as a more serious take on the mugging toy spaceman originally voiced by Tim Allen. But in the new Lightyear trailer 2, we see both the seriousness of Buzz Lightyear’s situation, and more of his classic egomania. Marooned on an alien world for a year, he attempts to escape the planet using hyperspeed, but ends up catapulting himself decades ahead in time. Like Buck Rogers, he’s now a hero out of time. And of course, Zurg bears some resoponsibility, somehow.

But he still has plenty of time to enjoy the sound of his own voice, and spout catchphrases. Chris Evans may be playing a man rather than a toy, but the action figure got that attitude from somewhere. Check out the video below:

There’s also a new poster which, in clasically immodest Buzz style, evokes visual comparisons to the star child of 2001: A Space Odyssey.

Much of the humor also derives from Taika Waititi as the nervous sidekick Morrison. Along with all sorts of future technology that’s better at talking than achieving.

According to the new official synopsis, “Lightyear follows the legendary Space Ranger after he’s marooned on a hostile planet 4.2 million light-years from Earth alongside his commander and their crew. As Buzz tries to find a way back home through space and time, he’s joined by a group of ambitious recruits and his charming robot companion cat, Sox. Complicating matters and threatening the mission is the arrival of Zurg, an imposing presence with an army of ruthless robots and a mysterious agenda.”

Mysterious, eh? Could Zurg secretly be not so evil? Is he actually going to have the Darth Vader arc that his toy did? We’ll find out June 17. Meanwhile, tell us your opinion in comments.
