Aside from being one of the most iconic horror directors of all-time, John Carpenter also happens to be a prolific composer who usually scores his own movies, with very few exceptions. However, Carpenter has also been known to score other directors’ films, including Blumhouse’s upcoming Firestarter remake. Ahead of its release next month, Carpenter has premiered his first track from the movie’s score. You can listen to it in the player below.
Firestarter’s main titles call to mind Carpenter’s own Halloween theme music, which shouldn’t come as a surprise. The soundtrack re-teams Carpenter with his son, Cody Carpenter, and Daniel Davies, both of whom he previously worked with on Universal’s recent Halloween sequels. But unlike the music from those films, Firestarter puts more of an emphasis on percussion amid all of the chilling synthesizer notes. The track also features some droning electric guitars, providing a solid backdrop for Charlie McGee to use her pyrokinetic abilities.

Additionally, Sacred Bones Records has announced a vinyl release for the soundtrack. The album doesn’t ship until October. But fans have several colorful variants to choose from, including black smoke with orange splatter and opaque red and orange galaxy colored vinyl. Chris Bilheimer, whose resume includes album covers for Neutral Milk Hotel, Green Day, and R.E.M., designed the soundtrack’s artwork.
Firestarter will hit theaters and Peacock on May 13.
