Sony Officially Greenlights Venom 3 With Tom Hardy

Tom Hardy and his alien co-star are officially on their way back to theaters for another round of symbiotic mayhem. During Sony’s presentation at CinemaCon earlier today (via Variety), the studio confirmed that Venom 3 is officially moving forward. Hardy will reprise his role as Eddie Brock in the upcoming sequel.

Venom 3 will pick up after the events of Venom: Let There Be Carnage, which finally hit theaters last October after several COVID delays. It didn’t quite match the record-breaking box office success of the original Venom in 2018. Regardless, Let There Be Carnage pulled in over $500 million worldwide and became the seventh highest-grossing film of 2021. Although it still received mixed reviews, many critics agreed that it was improvement over its predecessor.

There’s still no word on who might direct Venom 3. Andy Serkis previously directed Let There Be Carnage and has expressed a willingness to return for a third installment. But for now, Sony has yet to fill that position. We also know that Hardy (who earned a story-by credit on Let There Be Carnage) has already come up with ideas for the script.

Let There Be Carnage featured Hardy’s Venom going face-to-face with Woody Harrelson’s Cletus Kasady/Carnage and Naomie Harris’ Shriek. But both characters are unlikely to return for Venom 3. [SPOILER Ahead] However, the film appeared to set the stage for Stephen Graham to return as Patrick Mulligan, since he is now bonded to his own symbiote and could potentially come back as Toxin, like his comic book counterpart.

Michelle Williams also seems like a good bet to return as Eddie’s ex-girlfriend, Anne Weying. And as Spider-Man: No Way Home’s post-credits scene reminded us, Sony still wants to pit Hardy’s character against some variation of the famous webslinger. But whether it’s Tom Holland or one of his counterparts remains to be seen.
