Universal and Nintendo Push Super Mario Bros. Movie To 2023

The last time that the Super Mario Bros. were on the big screen was in the 1993 live-action movie starring Bob Hoskins, John Leguizamo, and Dennis Hopper. While the upcoming animated film from Universal Pictures and Illumination Entertainment was originally slated to arrive on December 21, Nintendo has announced that the project will now hit theaters on April 7, 2023 in the United States. The Japanese release will follow on April 28, 2023. Super Mario Bros. Movie.

Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto made the announcement via the official Nintendo Twitter account.

“After consulting with [producer Chris Meledandri,] my partner at Illumination on the Super Mario Bros. film, we decided to move the global release to Spring 2023,” said Miyamoto. “My deepest apologies, but I promise it will be well worth the wait.”

Chris Pratt will star in the film as Mario, with Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach, Charlie Day as Luigi, Jack Black as Bowser, Keegan-Michael Key as Toad, Seth Rogen as Donkey Kong, Kevin Michael Richardson as Kamek, Fred Armisen as Cranky Kong and Sebastian Maniscalco as Spike. Charles Martinet, Nintendo’s original voice of Mario, is also slated to have a cameo role.

The Super Mario Bros. movie will be directed by Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic from a script by Matthew Fog.
