Dwayne Johnson’s long-awaited Black Adam movie was one of several upcoming DC films delayed by Warner Bros. earlier this year. Naturally, fans were disappointed about having to wait a few extra months to watch Johnson suit up as the titular anti-hero. But according to Black Adam producer Hiram Garcia, the crew needs more time to fine-tune the special effects.
Garcia, who is also the president of production at Johnson’s Seven Bucks Productions, discussed Black Adam’s release date shift in a new interview with The Wrap. The COVID-19 outbreak had previously put production on hold for almost a full year. However, even though restrictions have been lifted, the industry is still facing some lingering consequences of the pandemic.
“I think we’re just in a world right now where there was a huge and understandable freeze-up when the pandemic hit and a lot of productions were put on hold,” said Garcia. “Now that the industry has really roared back, the pipeline for VFX is so jammed. Obviously all these superhero movies just require so much VFX, and we’re just in a situation where the majority of the VFX houses are just completely swamped with work.”

Black Adam had a relatively short delay compared to the other upcoming DC movies. Although they were previously expected to arrive in November and December, respectively, both The Flash and Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom were ultimately pushed back to 2023. Garcia suggested that the industry’s VFX backlog is to blame for their delays as well. But fortunately, it sounds like the workload is beginning to ease.
“They’re busting their ass and we’re so grateful for all those VFX houses,” continued Garcia. “It feels like things are starting to calibrate and I think you’ll start to feel less shifts down the line. […] “We’re excited about it and we’re really excited with the way the movie’s been looking and excited to finish it and get it out into the world.”
Black Adam will hit theaters on October 21.
