[SPOILER] Teases Possible MCU Appearances After Doctor Strange 2

Warning: There are spoilers ahead for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness!

Out of all the characters who appeared during Stephen Strange’s encounter with the Illuminati, Charles Xavier was the least surprising. There was no mistaking Patrick Stewart’s voice in February’s second trailer for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. And in subsequent promos, Marvel even revealed Xavier’s yellow hoverchair from the comics and animated series. The scene took place in an alternate reality that was presumably separate from 20th Century Fox’s X-Men films. And in a new interview with Entertainment Weekly, Stewart discussed what this means for Professor X’s future.

Stewart previously claimed that 2017’s Logan would be his final onscreen appearance as Professor Xavier. Regardless, he said the same thing about playing Jean-Luc Picard after Star Trek: Nemesis hit theaters in 2002. And now Stewart is currently gearing up for the third and final season of Star Trek: Picard on Paramount+. So if nothing else, it sounds like that experience taught Stewart to never say never again.

“The last [movie] that we did with Hugh Jackman, when the two of us were very, very different people from the characters that you’d met in earlier X-Men movies, I thought that brought down the curtain on my character and Hugh’s character very effectively,” said Stewart. “But the world of comic books is much bigger than I ever imagined.”

Until now, Marvel hasn’t offered any hints about its plans for the X-Men since regaining the rights in 2019. But Stewart believes that his take on Xavier may possibly return in some capacity.

“It’s possible and likely that there may be even more [appearances],” added Stewart. “I don’t expect ever to be Jean-Luc Picard again. But there is potential maybe for a reappearance of Professor Xavier.”

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is now playing in theaters everywhere.
