Warning: There are major spoilers ahead about Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness! Doctor Strange 2 screenwriter

Casual comic book movie fans may have been confused by the mid-credits scene in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, when Benedict Cumberbatch’s Stephen Strange was confronted by a white-haired stranger. However, comic book readers immediately recognized Charlize Theron’s character as Clea, Doctor Strange’s pupil-turned-lover, and his eventual wife. Clea is the rightful ruler of the Dark Dimension, and also the niece of the Dread Dormammu. Additionally, Clea is a powerful sorcerer in her own right, and the current Sorcerer Supreme in Marvel’s comic book universe. Doctor Strange 2 screenwriter.

During an interview with Deadline‘s Hero Nation podcast, In the Multiverse of Madness screenwriter Michael Waldron shed some light on Clea’s introduction to the MCU.

“First off, Charlize Theron, holy s***,” exclaimed Waldron. “There were different versions of that tag, as often [is] the case. We always knew we wanted to introduce Clea, who in the comics is, you can say, the great love of Doctor Strange. But really, in a lot of ways, [she is] his formidable equal as a sorcerer herself. Her backstory is fascinating. She is the niece of Dormammu, the giant floating head from the first movie.”

“They have a lot of great adventures in the comics, and we knew we wanted to introduce her,” continued Waldron. “But we felt like we had to close the book to some extent on his love story with Christine Palmer, Rachel McAdams’ character. So Doctor Strange hears that wisdom from Christine to face his fears and be open to the idea of loving someone. Then along comes Clea. And I guess we’ll see what happens next between the two of them.”

Presumably, Marvel lined Theron up for Doctor Strange 3 before giving her such a prominent place in this film. At the moment, that sequel has not been officially announced. However, this weekend’s opening box office numbers suggest that Marvel Studios will be giving the next Doctor Strange movie a greenlight in the near future.
