Samuel L. Jackson Joins the Garfield Animated Movie

Late last year, Guardians of the Galaxy star Chris Pratt was hired to be the voice of Garfield in a new animated reboot film. Now, according to The Wrap, veteran actor Samuel L. Jackson has also joined the voice cast of the Garfield animated movie.

You may be wondering: Who could Jackson play? Odie? A bad-ass Jon? Or even the long-missing Lyman? As it turns out, it’s none of the above. Instead, Jackson will portray Garfield’s never-before-seen father, Vic, a new character created for the movie.

Jackson is a prolific actor in live-action, but he has lent his voice to other animated films. He was notably cast as Frozone in Pixar’s two Incredibles movies. Jackson also reprised his role as Mace Windu in the animated film, Star Wars: The Clone Wars. His other animated credits include Zog in Astro Boy, and Whiplash in Turbo.

Garfield is based upon the long-running comic strip created by Jim Davis in 1978. The title character is a sardonic (and incredibly lazy) orange tabby cat who lives with his owner, Jon Arbuckle, and a dog named Odie. There have been numerous adaptations of Garfield, including animated series and two previous films that featured Bill Murray in the title role.

Davis is one of the executive producers on the new Garfield movie, alongside Andrew Kosove, Broderick Johnson, Bridget McMeel, John Cohen, and Steven P. Wegner. Chicken Little and The Emperor’s New Groove director Mark Dindal is helming Garfield. The script will be written by David Reynolds, one of the screenwriters behind Finding Nemo. Sony Pictures Animation will distribute the film on behalf of Alcon Entertainment.
