Avatar: The Last Airbender Gets Two More Animated Movies

Over a year after Nickelodeon announced that a new Avatar: The Last Airbender animated movie was in the works, the series’ original network has revealed plans for additional follow-ups. Earlier today, Paramount and Nickelodeon (via Entertainment Weekly) announced that two more animated films set in the show’s universe are currently in development.

Nickelodeon announced the original Last Airbender spinoff movie in February 2021. The network also launched Avatar Studios, a new venture designed to expand the franchise’s reach. The studio’s output will cover both new animated series and feature films. The studio also confirmed that Lauren Montgomery, formerly a co-showrunner of Voltron: Legendary Defender, is directing the first movie.

Montgomery is no stranger to the Avatar universe, having previously worked as a storyboard artist on the original series and its sequel, The Legend of Korra. She has also visited the DC Universe on more than one occasion. In 2007, Montgomery co-directed Superman: Doomsday, the very first DC Animated Original film. She went on to direct other films like Green Lantern: First Flight and Superman/Batman: Apocalypse and also co-directed Justice League: Crisis on Two Earths in 2010.

Avatar creators Bryan Konietzko and Michael DiMartino are executive producing the new movies alongside Eric Coleman. The studio isn’t divulging any plot details or release date info just yet. Regardless, each film will feature its own self-contained story and won’t tie into other installments.

“As original creators Mike and Bryan expand the Avatar universe with us, we’re keeping it all in the family with Lauren bringing the same kind of expert, beautiful work she did on the original series to her new directing duties on the forthcoming theatrical,” said Ramsey Naito, president of Animation and Development at Paramount Animation and Nickelodeon Animation in a new statement.
