There was never any doubt that Thor: Love and Thunder would come in at #1 at the box office over the weekend. The only question was what the total would be. Via Deadline, Love and Thunder had a domestic bow of $143 million. That’s $21 million above Thor: Ragnarok‘s $122 million opening weekend in 2017. But it’s also well below the $188 million opening of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness earlier this year. Love and Thunder opens.
Granted, the newest Thor sequel had much heavier competition than Multiverse of Madness. Coming in at number 2 was Minions: The Rise of Gru with $47.2 million and a new $211.7 million domestic take. Tom Cruise’s sequel, Top Gun: Maverick, landed in the third position with $14.6 million and an absolutely stellar $596.5 million domestic total. At this rate, there are only a few films that could challenge Maverick for this year’s box office crown. Perhaps Avatar: The Way of Water or Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, if they perform as well as their predecessors.
The music biopic, Elvis, was fourth place this weekend with $11 million, and $91 million to date. Rounding out the top five, Jurassic World Dominion had $11 million, and a new total of $350 million.

Scott Derrickson’s horror film, The Black Phone, scared up a sixth place finish with $7.45 million and $62.1 million to date. However, the news is less kind for Disney and Pixar’s Lightyear. It arrived in seventh place with $2.82 million and $112.2 million so far. That’s less than The Good Dinosaur‘s $123 million domestic total in 2015, which was the only previous Pixar film to land with a thud. At the moment, Lightyear seems destined to be the first Pixar flick to truly bomb at the worldwide box office. It’s international take is approximately $92 million.
In limited release, Marcel the Shell With Shoes On took the eighth slot with $322,600. Meanwhile, Everything, Everywhere All at Once continued its impressive four-month run with $255.600. That’s good enough for ninth place and a new total of $67.4 million, easily the highest ever for an A24 film. And finally, in tenth place was Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness with $248,000. However, that film is only playing in 140 theaters and already streaming on Disney+. The Doctor Strange sequel’s domestic total is now $411 million.
