Dean Fleischer-Camp Will Direct the Live-Action Lilo & Stitch Movie

Walt Disney Pictures hasn’t run out of animated pics to remake yet. Deadline is reporting that a live-action remake of Lilo & Stitch is going forward. Additionally, director Dean Fleischer-Camp has signed on to helm the film. Fleischer-Camp is best known for helming A24’s animated feature, Marcel the Shell with Shoes On, which is based on the animated shorts created by the director over a decade ago on YouTube.

Lilo & Stitch is one of the most recent Disney movies to land a live-action remake. The original film was released in 2002, with Chris Sanders as the voice of Experiment 626, an artificially created creature who was condemned to die. After hiding out on Earth and passing himself off as a dog, 626 is adopted by a young girl named Lilo Pelekai (Daveigh Chase), who renames him Stitch. While living with Lilo and her older sister, Nani (Tia Carrere), Stitch comes to value their concept of family. However, Stitch still has to evade aliens sent by the Galactic Federation to destroy him.

The success of the film led to two direct-to-video sequels including Stitch! The Movie, before spinning out into a Lilo & Stitch animated series.

Disney started work on the live-action remake in 2018, and Jon M. Chu was previously attached to direct the movie as a Disney+ original movie. However, Deadline’s report notes that it is no longer clear if the film will go straight to Disney+ or if it will get a theatrical release. The report also states that Chris Kekaniokalani Bright is in talks to pen the screenplay for the film.

This isn’t Disney’s only live-action remake on the horizon. Earlier this summer, Disney tapped Guy Ritchie to adapt Hercules to live-action as well. Given the studio’s track record, it probably won’t be the last animated-to-live-action remake.
