Marvel’s Secret Wars is coming, and it’s set to redefine the Marvel Universe in big ways. The latest character that will be reshaped is Spider-Man, as Marvel Comics has announced (via EW) they’re going back to the days of Peter Parker and Mary Jane Watson’s marriage in The Amazing Spider-Man: Renew Your Vows.
As some readers might recall, Peter Parker and long time girlfriend Mary Jane Watson were in fact married for a long time, but their marriage was written out of the canon in the still controversial “One More Day” storyline. “Renew Your Vows” will take place in a region of Secret Wars’ Battleworld where it was never gone, and Peter lives with Mary Jane and their daughter and still acts as the web slinger.
“Spider-Man, when you get down to it, is a character about responsibility. And the second he’s a father and a husband—he has a responsibility to share his powers with the world, but suddenly he has two people that are his whole world. That changes everything, the complete dynamic of what it means to have great power and great responsibility,” says series writer Dan Slott. “You need to be there for your daughter, you need there for your wife—in a way that he hasn’t had to be there for anyone else. And that drastically changes what it means to be Spider-Man.”
The series will replace the ongoing “Amazing Spider-Man” title for the duration of Secret Wars, but it will also be standalone for readers that aren’t reading the mega-sized event though it will effect Spider-Man in the future.
“If all you care about is Spidey, it’s totally cool if you have no idea what’s going on in Secret Wars…No matter who or what or how Spider-Man comics will be made in the future—elements from this story will go on into the next incarnation. Elements. Of this. Yes.”
The Amazing Spider-Man: Renew Your Vows #1 by Slott and artist Adam Kubert will debut June 3. You can check out preview images of the series below.
